Philosophy

My strong desire to teach evolved from my natural thirst for knowledge. I believe that when children are in a nurturing environment and are exposed to a variety of opportunities that empower them as learners, they develop a love of learning. I realized very early in life that I wanted to become a teacher who would facilitate and influence that joyful learning process.

My college education began at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Denton, Texas, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Renowned for its teaching program, TWU stimulated my knowledge quest even further when a professor and my student teaching supervisor exposed me to the awe of working with children with disabilities. I went on to obtain a Master of Education degree in Special Education with an Endorsement in Emotional Disturbance at TWU.  Shortly thereafter, my daughter was diagnosed with Dyslexia.  This caused an immediate need to better understand this learning difference and how to help my daughter become a better reader.  In an effort to help my child and further my understanding of learning differences, I attended The Shelton School and Evaluation Center where I earned my Certification and Licensure as an Academic Language Therapist.

My philosophy of education was further honed during the past sixteen years of instructing students with learning differences in reading. I have now participated in the positive outcomes of a holistic approach to education, providing an environment that considers the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social growth of each child. I believe an individualized and structured multi-sensory program with carefully planned successful experiences is essential in order for learning to take place. My experience has highlighted the fact that a positive self-concept and enjoyment of learning develops naturally within young children when they are provided with experiences that make them feel capable, competent and confident. It is my goal, as a Dyslexia Therapist, to make this possible for the children whom I am privileged to guide during their remediation.
