Why should I send my child to a Dyslexia therapist instead of a regular tutor?  Dyslexia Therapists have their Master’s Degree (or a more advanced degree) from a regionally accredited public or private institution of higher education.  They have successfully completed a training program accredited by The International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council, IMSLEC, that included, at a minimum, the following:

-at least 200 hours of coursework in multisensory structured language education from a training program that meets the requirements of the licensing rules;

-at least 700 hours of supervised clinical experience in multisensory structured language education;

-at least 10 demonstration lessons of the practice of multisensory structured language education, each observed by an instructor from a training program that meets the requirements of the licensing rules; and

-successful completion of the Alliance National Registration Examination for Multisensory Structured Language Education: Therapist Level administered by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

How often will my child need to meet with his or her Reading Specialist or Reading Tutor?

Effective intervention requires significant practice and repetition. The more practice your child is able to receive, the more quickly he or she will advance.  It is typical in the school environment for remediation to be provided 5 days a week for 45 minutes each day or four days a week for 60 minutes each day.  It should be offered in a one-on-one (often not possible in the public sector) or small group setting with no more than six students in the group.

In private therapy, two -three times a week is more standard.
