What is Dyslexia

dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin.  It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.

These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.

Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

The word dyslexia consists of two parts, “dys” meaning trouble with and “lexia”, meaning words (Vail, 1990).  Dyslexia causes the learner to have trouble with words.  It is estimated that 20% of the population is dyslexic (Shaywitz, 2003).  This difficulty sometimes occurs in reading, handwriting, spelling, listening and in synthesizing large amounts of written or spoken material (Vail, 1990). Processing phonological information can be very challenging.

My goal is to help your child become a proficient reader, speller, and writer.  I will do this through the utilization of the multisensory approach to learning the science of the English language.
